    Mack "Bud" Richardson, Jr., 87 of Brown Swamp Road, died Sunday, July 28, 2013 at his residence.
    Mr. Richardson was born in Conway, a son of the late Mack and Leona Barnhill Richardson. He was a member of Brown Swamp United Methodist Church. Mr. Richardson was a US Navy Veteran of WWII. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Kraft Foods, Sealtest Foods for 30 years and Dairy Farmers of America for 7 years.
    Surviving are: his wife, Willa Richardson of Conway; one son, Jerry L. Richardson and wife Lib of Conway; three grandchildren, Nathan Richardson, Tracey Herndon and Jessi Gibson; five great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Loretta Johnson of Conway and Judy Barnes of Myrtle Beach.
    Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday at Brown Swamp United Methodist Church with Rev. Neal Woods officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
    The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM Tuesday at the church in the Courtyard.

    He was retired from Hoffman & Hoffman, Columbia, SC. Mr. Johnson was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church , Columbia, SC. He attended Coastal Carolina University. He was Past Master of Lower Richland Masonic Lodge # 406 of Eastover, SC, and a member of the National Guard of Conway.

    Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Catherine "Cathy" Booth Johnson of Murrells Inlet, SC; two daughters, Anita Johnson of Myrtle Beach, SC and Elizabeth Smith and husband Matt of Pageland, SC; three grandchildren, Michael Nelson Smith, Wesley Ryan Smith, and Jayda Lynn Toteno; one brother, R.E. Johnson, Jr. of Conway, SC; one sister, Thelma Hicklin of Six Mile, SC; one nephew, Dr. O. Alex "Bud" Hicklin, III and wife Leslie and their sons, Alex and Evan of Clemson, SC; one brother-in-law, Richard N. Booth and wife Carla H. Booth and their daughter, Tami Casey of Conway, SC; a great family friend, Jim Zickle of Litchfield, SC; and his beloved cocker spaniel, Savannah.

  • Biography*: Patrolman Hedgpath was killed in a motorcycle accident while on patrol in Duplin County.

    Patrolman Hedgpath was killed in the line of duty on Friday Oct 23 1931 in a motorcycle crash in Richmond County, North Carolina.

    Alfonso Jerome Hedgpeth was born November 11, 1905 in Rowland, Robeson County, North Carolina to Lorenzo Z. Hedgpeth and Ella Fanny Hedgpeth. When he was 7 years old, his mother died.

    Alfonso is listed in the freshman class at N.C. State University 1920-1930, in the Catalog Register of Students, B. Ad.

    He later married Elizabeth Hedgpeth and they lived in Laurinburg, Scotland County, North Carolina.

    In 1931 he joined the Highway Patrol and a short five months later, on October 23, 1931, he became the second member to die in the line of duty. He was two weeks shy of his 26th birthday.

    The North Carolina Certificate of Death shows he died in the Hamlet Hospital, City of Hamlet, Richmond County at 9:30 p.m. from a fractured skull, fractured jaw, and crushed chest. Contributory cause of importance was listed as "state patrolman - ran into pole after a fast auto driver".

    He was buried at Rowland Cemetery on Rowland Cemetery Road west of Rowland, Robeson County, North Carolina on October 25th 1931 by Barnes Furniture Company as undertaker in Laurinburg, NC.

    As with so many, there is no marker on his grave to show he was a member of the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
