      Dear brother [,]
It is with pleasure that I attempt to write to you again it has been 4 or 5 months since I wrote to you last during which time I have been very sickly a part of the time but I think that I have almost recovered now. Aunt Margaret Carmichael was very ill when we last heard from her but she was improving slowly. O. H. [??] and J. J. E.? visited us this winter. I have been to a wedding since I wrote to you had a lively time well I enjoyed my self, finely never slept any all night went to the infare? next day and home worn out it was [Catherine] Catie Humphrey to Watts Glovier [Glover] [19 Dec 1878] or the reverse uncle Daniel Harrell has married aunt Betsy Clarlile [Carlisle]as we call her.
      F. P. [Franklin Pierce] Humphrey has gone to keeping store in the country near Rubin M'White mill we are all enjoying tolerably good. She resided in 1900 at Howellsville, Robeson County, NC. 1900 census.

She married Leland Lake Jones , Sr. on 14 Jun 1924 at Wilmington, New Hanover County, NC. Mary died on 30 Jul 1975 at Wilmington, New Hanover County, NC, at age 77. Her body was interred at Wilmington, New Hanover County, NC. Oakdale cemetery.
Note: Mary Emma BOWDEN is buried on HODGES-BOWDEN lot (D33) at Oakdale Cemetery, end of Nth. 16th. St., Wilmington, NC. Also buried on the same lot are her husband, Leland JONES; her father, Whiteford Bellamy BOWDEN; her Grandfather, John Cowan BOWDEN; and her grandmother, Emily Jane TILLEY. Many other family members are buried at the same location but there are not stones for all of the names listed on the caretakers description of the HODGES-BOWDEN lot. Emma BOWDEN was a lifelong member of Grace Methodist Church, Wilmington, NC.

Leland Lake Jones , Sr. Leland was born on 14 Apr 1888 at Edwardsville, Luzerne County, PA. Leland died on 31 May 1934 at Wilmington, New Hanover County, NC, at age 46. His body was interred in 1934 at Wilmington, New Hanover County, NC. Oakdale cemetery. Cpl. US Army, 28 May 1918/28 June 1919. Served in France with MG Co, 323d Inf, 81st Div (AEF), SN 2992049. Participated in campaigns in the Meuse Argonne and St. Die Sector. Was inducted from Wilmington, NC. Listed in the census of 1900 as living at home with his mother in Olyphant, Lackawanna County, PA. His occupation at age 12 is shown as "printer" leading to the conclusion that he may have been apprenticed. He opened a newspaper and printing shop in Red Springs, NC in the early thirties, however the business failed in 1933. It appears that the middle name, "Lake", was given to Leland in honor of Rev. Lot Lake, who was for many years the Pastor of the First Welsh Congregational Church, Scranton, where the family was active until the death of Leland's mother, Elvira, in 1938. No other family member is known to be named "Lake". Leland's address, listed on the birth certificate of his son Richard, born in 1927, was 644 Nth. Hyde Park Ave., Scranton, PA.

At the time of the 1930 US Census (ED 65-26, sheet 10-A, April 7), Leland, age 41; Emma, age 32; Leland Jr., age 4 1/2; Richard, age 3, were living at 1801 Nun Street in Wilmington, in a home Leleand was buying. Leland was listed as a linotype operator for a local printing company.
