These boxes were the best part of all the grandchildren's Christmas gifts. She was a very warm and loving person and no matter what her children or grandchildren did, she never forgot to tell them that she loved them. She wrote beautiful poetry and loved reading it. She always had a twinkle in her grey eyes. He was a cook on one of the ships. He enjoyed gardening and became quite an organic gardener. One thing that always stands out in my mind about my grandfather was he always poured his coffee into his saucer and drank it from there. He told me that was the best way to cool it off. Grandpa loved to tell silly jokes to his grandchildren and enjoyed playing with them. He was a kind hearted man. He told me when he was five years old, he had to go to work to help support the family. He would go to the corner grocery store, load up his wagon and deliver groceries to the people in the neighborhood. He said he made 5 cents a day which he gave to his father. He ran away from home and joined the Merchant Marines when he was sixteen because he could not get along with his father."
