The Heritage of Davidson County, Fannie Lue Swicegood Williams. For a time he was a circuit-riding preacher. John Larry, as he was known, took his family to TN and was there during the Civil War, serving in the Union Army. Twice he was captured by the Confederate Army and made to fight for them. Once he was recaptured by the Union Army. Under threat of death if he were caught again by either side, he simply left and "bush-whacked" (hide out) until the end of the war. Tradition says that Lucy and their children hid out with their horse in a bush-covered ravine when the Union Army crossed their land. After living through all this time of fear, Lucy died in childbirth in Asheville, NC while coming back to Davidson County, NC in a covered wagon. Her husband brought her body to Davidson County, NC for burial. The baby survived only a few days. His common name was 'John Larry.'
