Name Source: Louise Carmichael, Indiv.# 108936. He worked for Butler Lumber Company. The Strickland family had a Turpentine business and Edward Wilson travelled with the company to FL and back to SC. Edward Wilson and family would go to Little River, SC, now know as Calabash during the mullett season. The entire family would travel by wagon with their wives, children, and dogs and camp at Little River, SC. The family would live in tents during the mullett run. The fish would be packed in kegs with salt. This would supplement the food during the winter. The mullett runs would be the areas around Waccamaw, Pee Dee, and Little Pee Dee Rivers. The family also ate goat, and would butcher cows for additional meat. He had a 26 acre farm, 2 miles below the SC line in Horry County, SC. His mailing address was Green Sea, SC and Fair Bluff, NC.
Mary Magdelen Buffkin 'Maggie.' Mary was born on 23 May 1872. Mary died on 16 Mar 1943 at age 70. Her body was interred at Fair Bluff, Columbus County, NC. Powell cemetery. Name Source: Louise Carmichael, Indiv.# 108936. Up to the time of her death, Maggie believed that she would come into a large sum of money. A claim was made that Cain Wilson Strickland was the same Wilson Strickland that ended up in TX around 1830. Wilson Strickland was a TX Ranger at one point. No one knows what happened to him, but oil was found on his land. The land is still know as the 'Wilson Strickland Survey'. A law suit was brought by his heirs, and at the time of her death, there were about 5,000 descendants who were claiming to be heirs of Wilson Strickland. 18 Mar., 1943, Columbus County News. Whiteville: Funeral services for Mrs. Maggie M. Wilson, 70, of Fair Bluff, NC, Thursday morning at 11 o'clock, with the Rev. R. J. Rasberry, officiating.

Stephenville Empire - Tribune February 24, 1967 Rites Held for Bryan Biggs, 81 Services for Terrell Bryan Biggs, 81, were conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in the Trewitt-Reed Chapel with Rev. Kermit Johnson and Rev. Ray Scones officiating. Biggs was born Sept. 3, 1885 in Erath County and died in the Hico Hospital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. He was the son of Mr. J. D. Biggs and was married to the former Sallie Perkins in 1906. He was a member of the Baptist Church and a retired farmer. In addition to his widow he is survived by two sons, Charles, Fort Worth, and Robert, Stephenville; one daughter, Mrs. B. E. Serrett, Beeville; one brother, J. E. Biggs, Waco; two sisters, Mrs. Wylie DeLevan, Lubbock, and Mrs. Ina Lou Chapman, Tyler; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Two children preceded Biggs in death. According to the marker, Terrell Bryan Biggs' death date was February 17, 1967, however, the Texas Death Index has his date of death recorded as February 18, 1967 in Hamilton County, Texas. His date of death according to his wife's obituary, which follows, is also February 18, but the year is given as 1968.

Mention was not made at the time in these columns of the marriage of Mr. Pyle and Miss Millard Ray Latta which occurred at Denton about two months ago. Miss Latta was at that place attending the Normal. After the wedding the couple went to Mr. Pyle's home at Cross Plains for awhile and then on to Midland. These young people are well known and admired in Seymour. The bride made her home here for a number of years, being the niece of Mr. R. E. Bryan. Ragan, L. C. The following data is extracted from Biographies of Pulaski County, Georgia. Linneaus C. Ragan, son of Mary Elizabeth Daniel and Lafayette H. Ragan, was born January 7, 1879, in Pulaski County. His paternal grandfather, Alexander Ragan, and his great grandfather, Robert Ragan, migrated from North Carolina in 1835, and were pioneer settlers of Pulaski County. His sisters are Mrs. Walter Ferguson and Miss O'Bena Ragan of Hawkinsville. Mr. Ragan was educated in the schools of the county, graduating from Ebenezer College in 1896. He was reared on his father's farm, but at the age of twenty-one entered the mercantile business, which vocation he has followed for thirty-five years. In 1903 he was married to Miss Mary Alma Wall, of Milledgeville, Georgia, daughter of Laura Gentry and Henry Wall. Four children have blessed this union: Elizabeth, Henry, Julian, and Frances Willard. Henry was married to Miss Edith Claire Elder of Cochran, Georgia, in 1934. Mr. Ragan is one of Hawkinsville's most prominent citizens, always helping in every civic enterprise. He is a member of the Baptist Church and is a staunch Democrat, serving as chairman of the Democratic committee of his county. He has served as president of the Pulaski County Fair Association, president of the Chamber of Commerce, and is now a city commissioner, farmer, merchant, and banker. At present Mr. Ragan holds the office of State Senator, to which place he was elected without opposition. He has contributed much to the success of the session of the General Assembly, having served on many of the outstanding committees. Note from J. Paul Hawthorne - Born in Greenville, Alabama to Alexander Travis Hawthorne & Kathryn Ann Albertson. His dad left when he was 4, and so his mother took him and his siblings to an orphanage in Greenville. They later moved to Houston about 1910. After his mother's death when he was 16 years old he left the 8th grade to start working to keep food on the table. He enlisted in the army for WWI, and lied about his age because he was too young, in 1917. Back then you had to be 21 years of age to enlist. He went to France during the war as a medic. Back home he learned the Morse code and got a job with Union Pacific as a radio operator. He married my grandmother in 1922 and traveled with her around the West as a relief man with the railroad. The lived in a box car that the railroad provided. After their first son was born in Long Beach, CA they moved back to Houston where my father was born. J. B. became a contractor, building gas stations and side walks, etc, throughout South Texas & Louisiana. He and his family moved to Los Angeles in 1941. After WWII he began buying and selling military equipment that was coming back from the Pacific. He founded "LA Tractor" in those years and supplied equipment for the Hoover Dam project. J. B. & his family became wealthy and moved to Encino, CA where the movie stars lived at the time. He live across the street from John Wayne, lived by Al Jolson, Stan Laurel, and others. He became a supporter of the Republican Party and had luncheons, etc., for President Eisenhower and later for Richard Nixon at their home on Louise. He moved to Coronado, CA (San Diego) in 1956 at the invitation of Caterpillar Tractors, Inc. to head up and run the CAT dealership for San Diego County. The new company was called, "Hawthorne Machinery Company" which sold CAT tractors to the public. He designed & built his company headquarters in Kearney Mesa, across from General Dynamics. After Caterpillar told him that he had to retire when he turned 65, he turned over his business to his son, Tom Hawthorne. His Hawthorne family always referred to him as "Boardman", his wife's family always called him "Joe" and business people called him "J.B." I called him "Pappy".

His best was his burnt caramel filling cake. His family seemed to think his biscuits were best even when he over-browned the tops; they chomped on the crunchy tops, especially with blackberry jam and grape jelly at their Christmas Eve dinner parties and sing-a-longs.       Ragan was a member of Inman Lodge #637, Free and Accepted Masons, Atlanta, GA, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1956, and Secretary after that for 20 years. He is now a member of Mt. Park Lodge #729, F. & A. M., where he received his 50 Year Membership award. Mt. Park Lodge is located at Stone Mountain, GA in Gwinnett County.       Ragan was a member of Inman Chapter #112, Order of Eastern Star, Atlanta, GA, where he served as Worthy Patron in 1949 with his wife, Nell, as Worthy Matron. In 1934 on his 12th birthday he joined the Bronwood Methodist Church; he was a member of Harmony Grove United Methodist Church at the time of his death. He graduated from Houston County High School, Columbia, Alabama in 1939. His first regular job was secretary to President Dean Paden of King Hardware Co. on Peachtree St. in Atlanta. He was also secretary at Sharp-Horsey Hardware Co. in Atlanta. Ragan reported for duty at the U.S. Naval District Intelligence Office in Charleston, SC in January 1941. He utilized his shorthand and typing learned in high school and improved with his first two jobs. He was considered for an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, took all the preliminary test for admission, but decided that was not the life for him. He did office work In Charleston, and was transferred to Greensboro in 1944. He did investigative work traveling from Durham to Asheville interviewing travelers, missionaries and business executives of foreign countries. Ragan also interviewed business executives of foreign countries who had established businesses in the United States who might have information of value to the U.S. Department of Defense regarding the war at the time. The work ended when the war ended and Ragan was honorably discharged September 1945 after five years of service. He received the American Defense Medal for those on active duty prior to Pearl Harbor and the Good Conduct Medal. Ragan married Nell Hudgins of Atlanta at Mt. Vernon Methodist Church (where Nell grew up in northwest Atlanta). The Rev. L. B. Jones Jr. (father of L. Bevel Jones III retired of the United Methodist Church) officiating. Nell's mother, Mrs. J.C. Hudgins Sr. escorted Nell down the aisle of the church, as her father was deceased, and "gave her away." The wedding was solemnized on Sept. 5. 1942. After a short honeymoon in Atlanta visiting friends and spending nights in Room 849, Biltmore Hotel, Atlanta, Nell went with Ragan to Charleston, SC and established a home in Rainbow Row on East Bay (on tthe Battery). His Naval Intelligence Office which was on East Battery in walking distance, was later moved to the Fort Sumter Hotel on South Battery. Their first son Ragan Jr. (Sonny) was born in 1943 at the Naval Hospital: their second son David Anthony was born in Atlanta at Crawford Long Hospital in 1947. David passed away on June 3, 2005. Upon returning to Atlanta, Nell and Ragan were members of Mt. Vernon Methodist Church from 1945 to 1955, Audubon Forest Methodist Church (Pastor L. Bevel Jones III - Bishop of the United Methodist Church, retired) from 1955 to November 1969 when they became members of Harmony Grove Methodist Church with the late Rev. Randy Pollard as Pastor. Present Pastor is Dr. Rick Long. Ragan and family were ardent church supporters, ready and willing to serve whenever and wherever they were called upon or saw the need. He variously served as chairman of committee during Mt. Vernon renovation; Chairman of various Administrative Boards, Board of Trustees, Pastor Parish Relations, Church Lay Leader. He served as Institutional Representative of Troop #272 Boy Scouts at Audubon Forest (Sonny & David were members), established Boy Scout #41 at Mt. Vernon and served as Scout Master for some time. After returning to Atlanta In 1945, he was employed by Zachery Mfg. Co. in the broom manufacturing supply business until 1952. After that he was employed over 40 years as Director, Executive and accountant in casualty and life Insurance companies: Georgia Casualty & Surety Co., Atlantic American Corp. (holding co. of Ga. Cas & Atlantic American Life and other associated companies); American Interstate Ins. Co.; Atlanta International Insurance Co. Ragan retired in 1989 from Atlanta International and was employed as a 2 day a week special tax accountant by sister company Alexander- Howden North America Inc. where he retired permanently in 1992 when asked to take a full time job. Ragan became a member of Inman Lodge #637 of the Masons in 1946, served as Worshipful Master in 1956 and Secretary from 1956-1976 and retired when lodge moved to Mableton from Atlanta. He transferred his membership to Mt. Park Lodge #729 where he received his 50 year award, Apron and Pin in August 1996. In September, 1948 he became a member of Inman Chapter #112 Order of Eastern Star (along with nineteen others including wife Nell as Worthy Matron) and served with Hazel Bardon as Worthy Matron In 1951. He moved his LCM membership to Mt. Park Chapter #524 and received his 50 year pin in 1997. He served as organist for Mt. Park Chapter of Eastern Star for several years. Ragan was a member of Patrons Club of Georgia, Order of Eastern Star (served as President in 1950), members of Sons of American Revolution. Ragan's wife, Nell (affectionately called "Sweet Pea" by him) died April 26, 2002, just 4 months before they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Sept. 5, 2002. Survivors include one son: E. Ragan Pruitt Jr. (Sonny) and wife Sue; Daughter-in-law Donna Smith Pruitt; Three grandsons: E. Ragan Pruitt III (Tripp); Spencer W. Pruitt and wife Niloa; D. Anthony Pruitt Jr. and wife Jennifer, Two granddaughters Tiffany and husband Jeff Martin and Leighanne; Seven great grand- daughters: Kelsey, Hanna Ragan, Emma Rose, Chloe Morgan, Lucy Kyndall, Macy Grace and Alexis May. Funeral Services will be at Horis A. Ward Inc. Stone Mountain Chapel, 1355 Rockbridge Road, Stone Mountain Ga. 30087 (near Five-Forks Trickum Road) at 1:00 PM on Saturday December 19. Penland and Yeoman First Class Jack Haddle, U. S. Naval Reserve.       Miss Patty Hill was her cousin's maid-of-honor. She wore a dress of ice-blue satin with a full skirt of chiffon ending in a slight train. She wore a single strand of pearls, the gift of the bridegroom, and carried a nosegay of garden flowers.       The flower girl, little Nan Millwood, cousin of the bride, wore a floor-length model of pink organdy and carried a small nosegay. She wore a large blue ribbon in her hair.       The bride entered with her mother, Mrs. J. Clark Hudgins, by whom she was given in marriage. Her gown was of ivory satin fashioned along princess lines, featuring a sweetheart neckline and leg-o-mutton sleeves, ending in graceful points over the hands. Her fingertip veil of illusion fell from a coronet of orange blossoms and was worn by the former Miss Alice Hegwood when she became the bride of Rolland Tomlinson. Her only ornament was a gold locket, which was the gift of the bride's father to her mother at her wedding.       The bride's mother was gowned in a model of baby blue lace with a pink sash and her flowers were pink roses.       Among the out-of-town guests were Charles W. Pruitt, of Dothan, and Mrs. L. S. Working in so many organizations and businesses, she became a many faceted person, with many strong tendencies and emotions. I hope I can make you better acquainted with her as we are here together.       Nell was born in Atlanta, Georgia (Fulton County), Nov. 14, 1922 to J. Clark Hudgins and Otis Wall. She joined Mt. Vernon Methodist Church in 1931 or 1932. She graduated from Fulton High School in 1939 and the Draughon School of Commerce in `1940.       While growing up in Mt. Vernon Church, she was active in Sunday School and Epworth League Work, both on the local and city-wide level. She started teaching a class of Beginner age children when she was 14 and continued until she married and left Atlanta in 1942.       She met E. Ragan Pruitt, member of Grant Park Methodist Church at a Youth Rally at a session of the North Georgia Conference in Atlanta in Nov. 1940. She was going with James Penland, best friend of Ragan's at that time. On Sept 5, 1942, she married Ragan in Mt. Vernon Methodist Church with the Rev. L. B. Jones, Jr. (father of L. Bevel Jones, Bishop) officiating. She moved to Charleston, S. C. where he was serving in the U. S. Navy. Their first son, E, Ragan (Sonny) Pruitt, Jr. was born in the Navy Hospital in Charleston, and when he was four months old they brought him to be christened at the same altar where they were married in Mt. Vernon Church.       When World War II was over, they returned to Atlanta in Aug. (s/b Sept) 1945, where Ragan joined Mt. Vernon Church. A second son, David Anthony Pruitt was christened in Mt. Vernon Methodist Church.       While at Mt. Vernon Church she was generally active in the affairs of the church, served as Vice-Pres. of the Women's Society of Christian Service; and taught a Sunday School Class of Junior age boys.       In July 1955 the Pruitt family transferred its membership to Audubon Forest Methodist Church in southwest Atlanta as they had been residing in southwest Atlanta for 9 years. While at Audubon Forest Church, Nell served as President of the Wesleyan Service Guild (Working ladies' branch of Women's Society of Christian Service) for two years; served as Recording Secretary of the Atlanta-Southwest District, Wesleyan Service Guild for four years; served as Recording Secretary of the North Georgia Conference Wesleyan Service Guild for two years and was slated for the presidency but health problems prevented this service. Was a charter member of the Fidelis Adult Sunday School Class and the first Recording Secretary; served in whatever capacity she could in fun-raising projects for Troup #272, Boy Scouts of America sponsored by Audubon Forest       After moving to Lilburn in 1969, Ragan, Nell, Sonny and his wife, Sue and David Pruitt joined Harmony Grove United Methodist Church where the late Rev. Randy Pollard was pastor. At the time they joined, David was serving with the U. S. Air Force in Thailand, but wrote the church, asking that his membership be moved to Harmony Grove.       While a member of Harmony Grove, Nell organized and served as first President of the Wesleyan Service Guild; served on the Worship Committee and prepared the Communion Table for two years.       Nell was a Legal Secretary for some thirty years, having worked in the Fulton County District Attorney's Office, the Fulton County Public Defender's Office, the Law firm of Dunaway, Shelfer, Haas and Newberry; law firm of Arnold and Cate; Richard T. Winegarden (when he first entered private practice and before he became Superior Court Judge of Gwinnett County, GA). She served as President of the Atlanta Legal Secretaries Association for two years, and two years as President of the Georgia Association of Legal Secretaries. In 1979 she was named "Legal Secretary of the Year" by the Atlanta Legal Secretaries Assn. and was presented with a silver bowl appropriately engraved. She is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.       She worked about five years as a volunteer at the Carter Presidential Center, and as a Docent (Lecturer) at the Carter Library, conducting tours for visiting groups. Nell was named Volunteer of the Month at the Carter Center. When this was announced in the Carter Center Bulletin, this was printed: "Call the Volunteer office almost any Monday morning and the voice that answers will possibly be that of Nell H. Pruitt. Mrs. Pruitt is the volunteer chairman at the Carter Center on Mondays. A longtime supporter President Carter, Mrs. Pruitt decided even before retiring she wanted to volunteer at the Carter Center."       She joined the Order of the Eastern Star in 1940 and received her 50 year membership pin in due order. She served as Worthy Matron of Inman Chapter No 112 in 1949 with her husband as Worthy Patron. She transferred her membership to Mountain Park No. 524, Order of Eastern Star and served in whatever office she was asked to fill.       She loved to be with people. Whatever she did, she always put family first and foremost. Her husband says she was a tremendous wife, companion, comforter; also, a magnificent mother to their two children.       She is a member of Atlanta Chapter #18, United Daughters of the Confederacy; Philadelphia Winn Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (Gwinnett County); Gwinnett Historical Society; Golden Belles Grandmothers Club, Gwinnett County.       It's hard to compete with a person with so many facets of character and abilities.       They have two children, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren (3) girls and (1) boy and expecting another great granddaughter momentarily! (This great-granddaughter was born May 26, 2002, just a month after death of Nell)       Her love of her church work over the entire life-span kept her going when nothing else could.       Her many-years physician referred to her as a "tough-old-bird": and her family would concur that you had better believe it. She and Ragan would have been married 60 years the 5th of September, so now we are having an early celebration as a sendoff. She is in a better place and free of pain.       LET US BE GLAD THAT SHE WAS WITH US FOR SO LONG. ---------------------------.
