  GREENSBORO -- Annie Merle White Elam, 86, formerly of Bladenboro, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at Beacon Place. She was born in Bladenboro on Aug. 30, 1923, the daughter of the late Henry James and Esther Marie Thompson White. She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Elam; brothers, Henry James White Jr. and Donald White; and a sister, Marie White Bridger, all of Bladenboro.
  
  Final rites were held on Sunday, Feb. 6, at First Baptist Church of Bladenboro with Rev. Bert Young officiating. Burial followed in Pine Crest Cemetery. Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.
  
  Survivors include three daughters, Annette Elam Wetzel of Midlothian, Va., Sarah Elam Edmondson of Screven, Ga. and Meredith Elam Muse of Greensboro; a son, John Edgar Elam Jr. of Fairmont; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold White of Durham and Jerry White of Bladenboro.

  GREENSBORO - Mrs. Annie Merle White Elam, 86, passed away Feb. 2, 2010, in Beacon Place in Greensboro. She was born in Bladenboro on Aug. 30, 1923, to Henry James and Esther Marie Thompson White. After graduating as valedictorian of her class at Bladenboro High School, she attended Meredith College in Raleigh, where she met John Edgar Elam, a student at NC State. They married on Feb. 11, 1943.
  
  Like her parents, she was a lifelong member of Bladenboro First Baptist Church, where her grandparents and great-grandparents had been charter members. She taught Sunday school, led vacation Bible study school, sang in the choir, played the piano and pipe organ and wrote the history of the church for its 50th anniversary in 1961. Annie Merle was a devoted wife and mother.
  
  When the children reached school age, she helped her husband in his business, Bladen Milling Co. and later fulfilled her dream of finishing college. She graduated from Pembroke State University in 1963 and received a master's degree in child development and family relations from UNC Greensboro in 1964. She taught home economics at Tar Heel High School and middle school science in Bladenboro, and was head of the Home Economics Department at Pembroke State University from 1968 to 1981. During those years, she used her considerable skills to sew beautiful formal dresses and to plan many family dinners, celebrations and wedding receptions. After her husband's death in 1981, she lovingly cared for her parents until their deaths.
  
  An avid genealogist, she began a consulting business, Southeastern Research, publishing the White family lineage and several volumes cataloging the cemeteries and censuses of Bladen County. She was a member of the Battle of Elizabethtown Chapter, DAR and the Richmond-Stonewall Jackson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy. In 2006, she donated her extensive genealogical library to the UDC Headquarters in Richmond, Va. Some of her proudest moments were presenting a Pioneer in Space Medal to local astronaut Curtis Brown and attending his launch at Cape Canaveral as his special guest, serving on the Presidential Search Commitee at Pembroke State University, and placing the names of her husband and brother at the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. In 2002, her granddaughter, Anna, helped her fulfill a lifelong dream of accompanying her on a trip to Ireland. She lived in Wesley Pines Retirement Community in Lumberton from 1994 to 2006, before moving to the Arboretum at Heritage Greens in Greensboro. She was much loved and respected by her grandchildren, friends and family. She lived her life as a daily example and inspiration to all; Proverbs 31:10-31. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers, Henry James White Jr. and Donald White; sister, Marie White Bridger, all of Bladenboro; and son-in-law, Richard Wetzel of Richmond. She is survived by three daughters, Annette Elam Wetzel of Midlothian, Va, and her children, Julia and Ted Trebour, Anna and Jonathan Rabhan and Karl Wetzel; Sarah Elam Edmondson and husband Darryl of Screven, Ga., and their children, Rebecca and Hugh; Meredith Elam Muse and husband Harold of Greensboro and their children, Anderson and Jonathan; and by her son, John Edgar Elam Jr. and former wife Donna of Fairmont, and their children, Courtney, John Edgar III (Trey) and Jameson. Her great-grandchildren are Jackson and Collin Trebour, Jacob Wetzel, Dylan and Peyton Bullock. Also surviving are her brother and sisters-in-law, Harold and Sue White of Durham, Jerry and Jane White, Betty White and Wilma White, all of Bladenboro. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at Bladen-Gaskin Funeral Home & Cremations Services in Elizabethtown. Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at 11 a.m. in First Baptist Church, Bladenboro, led by the Rev. Bert Young. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery.
