Note: Alta was a wonderfully funny and warm woman. She was a crossword puzzle whiz and spent a lot of time doing her puzzles and knitting. She developed diabetes in her 40's and lived a happy and full life until the age of 81 when she died. Much of the credit for her longevity goes to Elmer, her husband, as he administered her insulin and prepared her meals and kept her healthy.

When asked the secret of their happy marriage (and they were possibly the happiest couple the family ever knew) Elmer said "Alta made my lunch for work everyday and she started my car every morning while I was eating breakfast and getting ready for work, even in icy, freezing, conditions.
We took care of each other."

Elmer said his motto in life was "To be kind to people. I have always lived my life trying to be a nice person." And that he is.

714 iii. Chester Allan Gerking 'Allan.' Chester was born on 1 Aug 1917. He married an unknown person. Chester died on 15 Sep 1983 at Puyallup, Pierce County, WA, at age 66.
Note: Chester died of Liver cancer in Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup. His ashes were scattered in the Puyallup River. Chester was known to everyone by his middle name "Allan".

Allan was a Bus Driver for Tacoma Transit for over 30 years. He drove what was then known as the Crosstown route from University Place to the Tacoma Mall. He was well known and well liked by many of his frequent riders. He often visited with sick and elderly friends he had made while driving bus. Every Christmas he made Lifesavers Dolls out of candy and yarn and delivered them to shut-ins that he knew. He also covered his toll-box on Christmas Eve and paid the fares for all his passengers on that day as a way of thanking them for supporting his route and paying his wages. He also had one of his granddaughters (Gina, April or Carla) dress up as Miss Santa and pass out goodies to the riders on the bus that day.

He also did special events for the people of Tacoma. For the Bi-Centennial, he "rented" a bus for the day and gave people free tours of Tacoma/Gig Harbor and paid for a cookies and punch party at the Transit Depot. He made the Tacoma News Tribune for his charitable efforts as a Soap Box Derby inspector and with his Extra Effort at being the nicest Bus Driver Tacoma had ever seen.

Chester attended Lincoln High School in Tacoma and graduated in about 1935 or 1936. His best friend all his life was Al Hoard who he met in high school. Al Hoard married a sweet woman named Hazel and they lived in Tacoma until Al died in about 1978.

Allan met Maria at Lincoln High School their junior year. Maria moved to Darrington, Washington with her family and graduated from high school there in about 1936. Her family then moved to Port Townsend and she started college at Western Washington College. Chester chased her down in Bellingham and they eloped in Port Townsend in about 1937. They lived in North Puyallup, Washington in a "berry shack" until his death in 1983.
