Elmo Hammond

Elmo Hammond. Elmo was born on 20 Nov 1913 at Columbus County, NC. He married Margaret Page. Elmo died on 13 Mar 2008 at Fair Bluff, NC 28439, at age 94. His body was interred in 2008 at NC. Powell Cemetery. FAIR BLUFF, NC Elmo Hammond, 94, died peacefully at his home March 13, 2008. Mr. Hammond was born Nov. 20, 1913, in Columbus County, a son of the late Billy Bob and Sally Mae Parker Hammond. Mr. Hammond was a 1938 graduate of Northwestern University in Chicago. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific. He began his career at the old Scotty Theater and continued to work with Scott Hardware of Fair Bluff until his retirement. Mr. Hammond was a lifelong member of Fair Bluff Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He also was responsible for broadcasting the church services for Fair Bluff Baptist Church and Fair Bluff United Methodist Church for 27 years. Mr. Hammond was preceded in death by his parents, Billy Bob and Sally Mae Parker Hammond; his first wife, Margaret Page Hammond, and his second wife, Ada Margaret Hammond; and two brothers, J.W. and Otto Hammond. Surviving are a brother, B.B. Hammond of Oak Island; daughters, Merilyn Hayes Duncan (Charles) of Garner, Celia Hayes Ogburn of Raleigh and Judith Hayes Enzor (Herman) of Nichols, S.C.; his grandchildren, Geoffrey (Evelyn) Duncan, Gina Duncan, Tim Pait and Trey Cuttrell; stepgrandchildren, Dana Elliott and Dowe Eznor (Kim); stepgreat-grandchildren, Amber Elliott, Zachery Elliott, Healey Taft and Heyden Enzor; one stepgreat-great-grandchild, Abigail Graco Floyd; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will held at 3p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2008, at Fair Bluff Baptist Church. Dr. Ray Lundy will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in the Powell Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Meares Funeral Home in Fair Bluff. Memorials may be made to Fair Bluff Baptist Church, Christian Life Center, P.O. Box 217, Fair Bluff, NC 28439; or to Fair Bluff Community Library, P.O. Box 428, Fair Bluff NC 28439. Mr. Hammond was very community oriented and had a love of music, flying and animals. Clara Marie Pearce Edge Gastonia - Clara Marie Pearce Edge, 84, of Gastonia, NC, died Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. She was a native of South Hill, Virginia, and the daughter of the late Lonnie Ervin Pearce and Mary Jane Regan Pearce. VISITATION: after the memorial service Sunday, November 02, 2008, Myers Memorial United Methodist Church . MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2:30 PM, Sunday, November 02, 2008, Myers Memorial United Methodist Church. INURNMENT: Private Mrs. Edge was a member of Myers Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will be missed by all who knew her. She was an avid gardner. Notes for JOHN CHESLEY DAVIS: Chesley farmed for two years; when he lost money both years he decided that farming was not for him. During World War II, he worked in Baltimore, MD at the Rubiroid Plant making tar paper. Upon returning to North Carolina, he worked with a construction company building towers for power lines. He then worked for the V & CS railroad which ran between St. Pauls, Lumberton, and Elizabethtown, NC. In 1950, he took a job with the bridge department of the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He worked out of the Gillburg location until he retired in 1979. On January 3, 1994, he and wife Ernestene celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. A Golden Anniversary party hosted by their daughters and grandchildren was held in Harriet Baptist Church Fellowship Hall; approximately 75 guests attended this celebration. In October, 1994, Chesley celebrated his 80th birthday with a pig picking hosted by his daughters and their families.i .
