Her father died when she was about six weeks old. Her mother died when she was about fifteen years old. She made her home with her half-sister, Susan Gaus, until her marriage when she was only sixteen to Wiley E. Clapp. They, with a company of relatives, came by wagon to IN. They stopped in TN, where Margaret gave birth to a son, William Emery Clapp. They settled near the town of Petersburg, IN. Wiley Clapp died the same year. Margaret got a man and his son to take her and her baby to Brown County, IL, where she had three brothers living. She gave the man everything she had to bring her to IL. They came in a wagon. It took them about three weeks to make the trip. (About 75 years later, I, the writer, youngest daughter of Margaret Colston, made practically the same trip in an automobile in eight hours.) When they came through east of Jacksonville there was nothing but tall prairie grass ... they could not see a dozen yards from them. Jacksonville was just a small town.
