  Mrs. Martin was born June 27, 1901, in Davidson County to David Franklin Conrad Sr. and Mary Marinda Miller Conrad. She was a lifelong resident of Davidson County and a homemaker. Mrs. Martin had 11 years of perfect attendance at school and attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She was a member of First Baptist Church and of the church's Mary Conrad Circle and was a member of the Garden Makers Garden Club. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Allison Bailey; three sisters, Moselle Conrad, Beulah Sharpe and Mildred Shoaf; and two brothers, David F. Conrad Jr. and Druid Conrad.
  
  Surviving are a daughter, Janice Martin Durham of Lexington; three grandchildren, Parks Bailey, his wife, Lori, and their children, Mitchel and Jennifer, of Wilmington, Martin Bailey, his wife, Sherry, and their children, Annie and Clark, of Lexington, and Michelle Walser, her husband, Jimmy "Bo," and their children, Aleigha Tosco, Taylor and Jessica.
  
  The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the home of the daughter, 107 W. Fifth Ave.

  Editor: Just before Christmas, Davidson County lost one of our most outstanding citizens. Cornelia Conrad Martin, 98, was born June 27, 1901 to Mary Marinda Miller Conrad and David Franklin Conrad Sr. She resided here all her life and was a life member of First Baptist Church. She loved being informed, and was educated at Lexington Senior High School and Woman's College, never missing a day, nor ever tardy for school.
  
  Her parents graduated from the Holly Grove Lutheran Academy, after which they moved to Lexington, where he worked for J.F. Ward Co. Her father went into the hardware business and was appointed twice as postmaster of Lexington, non-consecutively.
  
  Al Martin, former minister of music of her church, said, "She was one of the last true Southern ladies." She was always kind, polite, nonjudgmental. I never heard her say an unkind word about anybody. Once, I tried to get her to say something bad about the devil. I believe she said something like, "He is faithful in his work."
  
  She loved the church and her Lord Jesus Christ. She supported it, prayed for it, held it in high esteem as well as her pastors.
  
  Cornelia's life was no rose garden. She overcame many disappointments, heartaches and difficult situations, which, no doubt, helped make her the genuine person she really was.
  
  She was the oldest living Conrad in Davidson County. She had set out to make it to 100, but, only missed it by a year and a half.
  
  Her longevity was not so much of her legacy, but, it was the refined example she set for all her fellowmen, kinsmen and acquaintances. Yes, we'll miss her, her smile, inward and outward beauty, as well as that special person God put here for a divine purpose.

The Dispatch, Apr., 1916. An article reads as follows - Mr. Jake L. Bowers, son of Mr. W. H. Bowers of Conrad Hill, died April 14th in the St. Josephine Infirmary, Houston, Texas, after suffering for nearly a year from hardening of the arteries. His remains were brought here Friday and funeral services were conducted from the home of his brother, Mr. John F. Bowers, on Center Street, by Rev. V. Y. Boozer, assisted by Rev. J. M. Senter. The body was laid to rest in the city cemetery, as it was the request of the deceased just before death that all that remained mortal of him might be borne back to his native heath for its last abiding place. Deceased was 38 years old and had twice been married, first to Miss Mary L. Goss, who died in 1906, leaving one daughter, Jessie May. The second wife, who was Miss Annie L. Horton, survives, with one daughter, father, mother, five brothers and two sisters. Mr Bowers was in Houston infirmary for two months previous to his death and while ill received many calls from Texas friends and two uncles, Mr. A. L. 352. Dr. Clyde Reitzel⁷ Hedrick , MD (Ivey⁶, George⁵, Mary⁴ Conrad, Hans³ Conrath, Johann?², Johann?¹). Clyde was born 31 May, 1900. He married Stella Mae Lamkin 1 Jun., 1929. Clyde died 18 Dec., 1973. His body was interred.
He was a prominent physician in Lenoir, NC, serving as a family doctor, but with special training in heart ailments. He opened his office in Lenoir in 1926, and continued his practice in Lenoir until his death. Dr. Hedrick seemed tireless as he went about his work in ministering to the sick. He was truly a family doctor, and continued to make house calls throughout his long career. Some of these calls extended beyond Lenoir, and he was known to travel by foot, horse, railroad hand car, and automobile. His hospital patients were cheered by his appearance at their bedside, usually three times per day. He would not leave those who were very sick. His patients knew his love for roses, and rarely was he caught without one in his lapel. He loved to sing old familiar songs, and they seemed to bring out the joy that was in his heart. In his early practice his office calls were just $1 each. These later were increased to $3 and in 1973 they were $5. He was known for his speed whether driving his car, giving a shot, or swabbing a throat. Though busy with his extensive medical practices, he devoted much of his time to his church, to fraternal organizations, and to other services. He was a life-long member of Zion (Reformed) United Church of Christ, and was very active in all of its work. Dr. Hedrick was prominent in medical circles, having served as president of the Caldwell County Heart Association, president of the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of NC, Chief of Staff of the Caldwell County Hospital, and an active member of other medical groups. Dr. Hedrick liked sports, and in early life excelled in football, basketball, tennis and golf. He was a physician for the Lenoir High School Football Team for 45 years. Dr. Hedrick was a strong family man, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He never failed to give his wife credit for rearing his family. Yet, his children were always aware of his love, guidance and trust. He looked forward to all gatherings of people, but most of all to the Hedrick reunion. As a hobby he collected old clocks, old coins, silver certificates and silver dollars. He was the first Vice President and promoter of The Hedrick Family Reunion in 1951. On 11 Dec., 1973, seven days before his death, the people of Caldwell County honored Dr. Hedrick by naming him "Man of the Year". At his funeral on 11 Dec., 1973, his pastor, Rev. Robert E. Myers, used as his topic "JOY". This seemed most appropriate because Dr. Hedrick lived his life first for JESUS - OTHERS - YOU. Although Dr. Hedrick died during the Christmas season, he had spent his life bringing "Christmas" into the lives of all who knew him.
