Memoir of Charles Clodfelter -
      If one could have just one word to describe "Mr. Charlie" Clodfelter, it would be cheerful. He was employed at the George E. Nissen Wagon Works, located on Waughtown Street, in the Waughtown community, and in going about the village, he always had a kind word and a smile for those around him. He loved people. In the Waughtown Baptist Church, he served in his definite way and wished for the Lord's work there a success, while he personally presented his body at each and every service of the church. His love for the Lord Jesus, a cherry word for his fellowman, and a happy smile for all, bring sweet memories to those of us who knew him. Some men have much money to give and they leave some of it to be dedicated to God's work after they leave this world. That is wise and good, but we believe that a Godly life of cheerfulness, and a helping hand to a brother in need, may be of greater blessing to mankind. His common name was 'Charlie.' He resided at Waughtown, Forsyth County, NC.

A memoir of Hattie -
      Our departed sister, Mrs. Hattie Jenkins Clodfelter, was the daughter of the late Albert Riley Jenkins, and his wife Sally Cottrell, and was born in Irdell County, NC on March 20, 1864. She is the last survivor of a family of seven children; three girls and four boys. Her father passed away when she was only 3 years of age, and as the daughter of a widow left in straightened circumstances, she early learned the meaning and the value of sacrifices. Who can say but that this fact had more to do than anyone realized with the development of that strength od character for which she was so greatly beloved!

      It was about the time of her father's death that the family moved from Irdell County, NC to Waughtown, NC where Sister Clodfelter was destined to spend the remainder of her long and useful life. On June 13, 1880, at the age of 16, she was united in marriage to the late Charles A. Clodfelter, and together they set about making a Christian home. No one who knew that home ever had the slightest doubt as to its true character - it was indeed a Christian home. There, family worship was invariably held; there, Christ was the unseen, but very real Guest at every meal, the tried helper and Comforter in every hour of sorrow or trouble.

      To this union 12 children were born. Two died in infancy, and one in young manhood, but the rest lived to call this mother blessed, not once, but over and over again. Her large heart, her deep sympathy and understanding, her boundless generosity and unselfishness, were not exhausted with the cares and responsibilities of her children or home. Even the task of caring for children's children came to her, she accepted it as a matter of course. The amazing fact is that she reared in all 21 children, one of them connected with her by no ties but those of compassion. Added to this, her own mother lived with her for 30 years.

     One would think that with such a heavy responsibility upon her in her own home, she would have felt herself excused from doing ought elsewhere. But such was not the case. Many are the calls for help to which she responded, often leaving her bed in the middle of the night to minister to a sick neighbor, or a neighbor's child. She was the first one the friends and relatives thought of sending for in time of domestic crisis. As one of her children remarked since her passing; "Mother spent her life doing for others". How well she must have understood the Master's words: "Whosoever would save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospels', shall save it."

      Today we witness the end of one of those homes which has made this country what it is. A young couple started out together in the dark reconstruction period following the War between the States. There was no thought of extended leisure or abundant creature comforts. They bought their modest home, and the young wife in addition to the heavy duties demanded by the size of her family, found ways and means of earning something to help pay for it. Together they worked, together they lived, together they prayed, together they worshipped. We can be sure that the thought of a separation never once crossed their minds - they were too busy and too devout. There was neither time nor inclination for the things of the world, the flesh and the devil. Would to God we had more homes like this today.

     It was in early girlhood that our Sister found Christ as her Saviour, and surrendered her life to Him. She united with the Waughtown Baptist Church, and become one of its dependable members. There wer times when she could not attend public worship, but she saw that the children went, and went regularly. And her husband was always in his place in God's House, for it is hardly possible that such a home as we have tried to picture could have existed apart from the influence and blessing of the Church of Jesus Christ on earth.

      For three years her health has been failing, and friends and lived ones are glad she was spared a long, lingering illness. She was critically ill for only one day, and it was not until shortly before the end that it was known just how sick she was. Confined to her bed on Saturday, she spent a restless night, and at 8:35 in the morning of the Lord's Day, January 9, 1938, she entered into her eternal reward, at the age of 73 years, 9 months, and 8 days.
